Do you know what exactly a heart attack is?

Like every part of our body, our heart also needs a plenty of oxygen to survive. A heart-attack happens when the blood-flow which brings oxygen to the heart muscles is severely reduced or cut off completely. Risk of heart attack increases for men mostly after the age of 45 and in women the risk increases after the age of 55, mostly after menopause.

Don’t confuse heart attack with cardiac arrest:

Most of the people confuse heart attack with cardiac arrest where both are different medical emergencies. Heart attack is a blockage of an artery that stops the heart from pumping blood around the body whereas in a cardiac arrest, heart stops its functioning abruptly.

Let us know the reasons for heart attack:

It happens when coronary arteries that supply blood to heart muscle gets narrowed due to plaque formation with substances like fat and cholesterol. This phenomenon is called atherosclerosis.

When plaque forms within the arteries of the heart, several blood clots form that block the flow of the blood through the arteries to the heart muscles.

Sometimes coronary artery temporarily contracts or goes into spasm. When it happens, the artery narrows and blood flow decreases to the heart. Cause for this spasm is unclear. It may occur in normal appearing blood vessels or in partly blocked vessels by atherosclerosis. It can also lead to heart attack.

Heart attack can also occur due to spontaneous tearing of the coronary artery wall.

Beware of these symptoms:

  • Ache or discomfort in the arms, neck, back, stomach or jaw

Does your heart get damaged permanently after a heart attack?

  • Level of damage varies with accordance to the size of the area affected by the blocked artery and also the time gap between the injury and treatment.
  • Damaged heart muscles after a heart attack heals by forming scar tissue. It usually takes several weeks for your heart muscles to get healed.
  • Heart is a very complex organ. Even if it is injured, the rest of the heart keeps working. But in a few cases, due to severe damage, the heart may be weakened and may fail to pump blood to all parts of the body as usual.

Will you be able to recover?

Yes! With proper treatment and organised lifestyle the after effects of a heart attack can be healed and prevented. Heart muscles begin to heal soon after a heart attack. It usually takes about 8 weeks to heal. Suggested therapies such as thrombolysis which is done immediately after a heart attack can help in the process of recovery.
